Boom Painting and Modification

Winter 2008

You may find this mod ODD but I am not the first!

Here is the concept:
pic #1 shows how lazy jacks force the sail into a small narrow area at the base of the boom.
pic #2 shows that by adding wings to the boom at the lazy jack locations, the sail has more area to fall into.
pic #3 is an example of one installation I found.

Doing a bar or series of bars in this manner is nice but way too expensive in welding and way too many holes in the boom.
So here are some other designs that I used as a guide.

Now to my bars!
I added a stand off at each lazy jack location.
My welder made what looks like a large hand rail with round pads for feet to attach to the boom. All made of aluminum so as to not add weight.
The two pics below are a test fit to the boom in my cramped basement.

After looking at the nice bars and the old looking boom I decided to take it apart and paint it with one part Interlux paint.

Boom painted two coats!!!

Happy Sailing!
