Ice
Box Lower Door for the First Mate!!
Layout - Design - Build
Spring 2007
REVISED 4/11/2007
I feel that a front loading box is not a problem as long as the door seals are tight. Also Michele feels that the diving to the bottom of the existing icebox is unpleasant and something that can only be done by taking out all the top shelf items and diving to the bottom. More cool air is lost doing that procedure than will be lost opening the new lower door.
Purchased Door and Frame from:
Great Water Inc.
Marine Systems
14 Maine Street
MS 34, Brunswick, ME 04011

This door and frame is a
13" x 10" Insulated Hatch
Item # RP-500-0200 Medium Hatch - 13" x 10" opening
$289 ouch! http://www.great-water.com/pages/Refrigeration/ice_box_design.htm But that is cheap compared to $630 Glacier Bay Ready-To-Mount Ice Box Hatch! See below for more info on that hatch.
Finish
Pre manufactured lid's and frames are designed to be finished off using your own countertop or suitable facing material. Suitable materials include plywood/Formica, Corian, teak, tile or any of the new lightweight cabinetry materials.
Installation
The hatches can be installed in many different ways - flush or raised, front or top opening.
Screw drivers are acting as clamps. (everyone comments that this is not the best use for screwdrivers, sorry, I had no wood wedges!) I set the frame into thickened resin as
glue.
