One obstacle that I have to overcome is the 50 gal fuel tank. "Effie" has her fuel tank under the salon floor and 'Kindred Spirit' has her fuel tank under the salon seat where I am mounting the chairs. Alan (Effie) was able to modify and use part of the chair base where I will not be able to do so.
|
| Process:
The chairs must be located on the plywood making up the salon seat base.
All rotating (chair must rotate like in the office!) and all sliding (chair to
move in and out) hardware, must be no deeper than 3/4" below platform or
it will hit the fuel tank. All tilting (chair must tilt back, my rule!)
must also be built into the same platform. I removed the existing platform to
expose the fuel tank. This platform will be used for a template for a new
plywood base. It also gave me the chance to see the complete tank. Looks in
real good shape.
Next process was to determine how far back the chair would tilt. Tilting the chair involves cutting away 4" of the shelves behind the chairs. The best way I could determine was to make a mock up salon seat in my basement and pretend I was on the boat. This allowed me to cut only the 4" of the shelf instead of the original 7" I was thinking about. The seats when slid back will slide into that 4" recess and actually give us more area around the salon floor as the old cushions stuck out 3" past where the new chair will be. To get the tilt I want, I have to slide the chair out 8" and tilt back till I hit the back cut out. Rotating hardware was from Home Depot. Ball bearing lazy suzan that is 12" in diameter and only 1/4" high. That easily solved the problem of rotating the chair. |

Supporting the swivel on a curved bottom of the seat was a challenge until I thought of Bondo. I place blobs of Bondo on the seat and pressed on the swivel. When the Bondo almost set up, I removed the swivel and I was left with the impression on the swivel base. I cleaned it up and screwed on the swivel and it is now supported all the way around the curved seat. |
