Salon
Table!!
Layout - Design - Build
Now till done
REVISED 5/16/2007
|
I have been emailed from a couple of very observant people that have looked at the salon seat finished pictures and saw the table is missing and the mast is stepped!!!!
Well, why is the table not on the boat???
We were in a rush to get the boat into the water and the mast stepped,
so off we went to the boat on launch day last Saturday. As they were lowering the mast through the deck hole, I remembered that the table was still home in my basement.
What was I to do? The cost of the crane to pull the mast again and slide the table in is NOT in my budget.
Now, some of you will believe that I can be that dumb but I am not. It is not a true story. The part about the table in my basement is true. My intentions were to remove the leaves and cut the table in two so I could install and remove it with the mast in place. It would make the mast wiring and installation so much easier.
Because I installed the smaller table between the chairs on the port side, which we are using now, I left the table home, uncut! While on the boat last weekend Michele and I decided it would be great to have a different "storage" type of table. This led to a list of the pro's and con's of the old table.
1: Table leaf on port side is no longer needed
2: Love the wine bottle storage and two small draws
3: Hate it when we are sitting on the salon seat and want to pull the leaf up. No can do.
4: Hate getting to the mast wiring, though by cutting the table in half, I would solve that problem.
5: Table top not very large in the closed position.
6: With leaf up on starboard side it is hard to slide around from galley side
7: Hate that we will no longer be able to play "ping pong" if I remove the large table
New Table Ideas:
1: Larger base, more storage, four draws and plenty of wine bottle storage
2: Larger top when in closed position
3: More space on port side. Table only would go to centerline of mast, starboard side.
4: With two portside salon chairs and table, we do not need large salon table
SO.........the rest is documented below in pictures
|
Island Packet had the right idea when they designed the salon on their larger boats with a wall hung salon table. It really opens up the space.
|
Took this old wood cabinet, bent and twisted till it looked like the picture
below!
|

"Proto type" for salon table.
The big question is will it fit down the companionway????
|

This is the base looks like compared to the old, not as long but wider. Same
height.
Table will go to centerline of mast. No table needed on port side because of the
new chairs and table between them.
|
How it works.......
Filler strip with two arms to pull out.
|
First part of prototype top.
|
Second part of top.
|
Arms slide out.
|

Table folds out flat.
|
This is the table that I will try on the boat. While on the boat, I will determine the best posible roundness for corners and curves to get the shape table that works and looks like it belongs.
|
Table top compared to the old.
Not much smaller but much more convienent than the fold up into your knees!
|

Possible storage from top.
Two small doors are planned on this end (aft of mast) and 4 draws at the big
opening on the other side (forward of mast).
|
|
|
Took table top home and added Formica and edge
|

Will live with this Prototype all summer and see if I need to make changes
before making the real table.
